2018 - to date: Independent Consultant, Chair of the GEM Technical Steering Group (GEM is Germplasm Enhancement of Maize, a USDA/USA Universities and Seed Companies Project), Member of the Science & Technical Steering Committee of the CIMMYT's Maize and Wheat AGG (Accelerating Genetic Gains) Project (5-year term started in 2020) and continued to consult for several seed companies in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
2014 to 2018: Independent Consultant; Chair of the GEM Technical Steering Committee; WEMA/AATF Maize Breeding Consultant helping the NARS Maize Breeding; Board Member of the AGRA/IMCDA (Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa-Improved MSc in Cultivar Development Council, a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project) and CIMMYT-IMGRAC (International Maize Germplasm Advising Council)
2013 to 2014- Advisor for WEMA Maize Breeding Team and Monsanto Maize Germplasm Team. In 2013 got the Monsanto Co "Science & Technology Career Award", one of the most distinguished Awards for this company. Retired from Monsanto in October of 2014.
2010- to 2012- ExPat in South Africa to lead the WEMA Maize Breeding, managing all WEMA/Monsanto Breeding activities in Sub-Sahara Africa. WEMA (Water Efficient Maize for Africa) was a PPP (Public & Private partnership. Co-Lead of the WEMA Product Development Team. Member of the Monsanto Global Breeding Leadership Team. In 2011 got the Monsanto Corn Breeding Career Award.
2007-2010- Central/RM 105 Commercial Corn Breeding Lead managing 7 corn breeding sites in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. Became a member of the steering committee of GEM (Germplasm Enhancement of Maize) and represented Monsanto at the USDA Maize Crop Germplasm Committee (USDA; Universities and seed industry). Became US citizen in October 2008.
2003-2006- Monsanto North America Corn Breeding as Commercial Corn Breeder and Site manager for the Waterman Research site at Dekalb-IL. Co-Lead of the Monsanto Maize Germplasm Team. Developed several temperate maize inbreds and many commercial hybrids
2000-2003- Monsanto Asia Research Director managing all crop breeding activities for Monsanto in Asia. Open the first maize research station for Monsanto in China.
1998-2000- After Monsanto's acquisition of Cargill International became moved to the United States and became the Tropical Corn Breeding Director managing Brazil and South/Southeast Asia.
1991-1998- Worldwide Tropical and Subtropical Corn Breeding Director for Cargill International managing corn research activities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Opened the first Cargill Breeding Station in India and started its corn breeding activities.
1982-1990- Cargill Center of Brazil Corn Breeding Manager; became the Southeast Asia Liaison and started the corn breeding activities in Thailand and Philippines for Cargill; Got the Cargill Achievers Award for developing southern rust (Puccinia polysora ) resistant hybrids for Brazil.
1977-1982- Dekalb Brasil Research Manager. Started the Corn Breeding program for Dekalb in Brazil. Released XL560; XL 670; XL604 and others. Dekalb XL560 was in the market for 17 years.
1974-1977- Worked at EMBRAPA; participated in the Implementation Team that started the Corn and Sorghum National Research Center; and was the first Sorghum Crop National Breeding Lead. Developed two-grain sorghum hybrids (BR300, BR301) and two sweet sorghums (BR501 and BR601) together with Dr. Robert E. Scaheffert (USAID/EMBRAPA). BR300 was marketed for more than 20 years.
1973-1974-Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) Sorghum Breeder. Walter had the opportunity to visit Sorghum breeding activities in Puerto Rico (USDA), and the USA States of Georgia, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana, and collect inbreds to start a new breeding program at the IAC.
1972-1973- Brief stint (8 months) as corn breeder at the Brazilian seed company Agroceres Seeds.
1968-1974- Agronomy Degree and MSC Degree at University of Sao Paulo Genetic Institute under the orientation of Dr Ernesto Paterniani.
